A root canal treatment is a successful procedure that allows you to retain a tooth instead of extracting it when the nerve of the tooth becomes infected. By preserving the tooth, it prevents the misalignment of other teeth and potential jaw issues. This approach also eliminates the need for a prosthetic tooth. Aviva Dental in Etobicoke provides root canal treatment, also referred to as endodontic treatment. Schedule a visit to our office today.
Steps of a Root Canal
- 1. The dentist will administer a local anesthetic, also known as freezing.
- 2. A rubber dam is placed around the tooth that is being treated by the dentist in order to defend it against bacteria that may be present in your saliva while the procedure is being performed.
- 3. A hole is created in the tooth by the dentist so that they may access the root canal system and the pulp that has been injured.
- 4. After the root canal system has been cleansed and enlarged, the pulp is removed by the dentist using extremely fine dental tools.
- 5. After the canal has been cleaned, the dentist next fills and closes the canal.
- 6. Tooth is filled with a temporary tooth or filling.
Retreatment
Root canal procedures are often effective in most cases. Nevertheless, there are instances in which a second root canal procedure is necessary. This practice is known as retreatment. In the process of retracting a tooth, the root canal filling material is removed, and the canal is then cleansed once again, reshaped, and filled with root canal filling material.
Surgery
Root canal surgery is sometimes required in situations when a conventional root canal therapy is either not possible or has failed to provide the desired results. The purpose of surgery is to examine the end of the root for any fractures or cracks, to remove sections of the root that were unable to be cleansed during the standard root canal treatment, or to clear up an infection that did not improve after the regular therapy.
