Care After Minor Surgery

You could have some discomfort, bleeding and edema after minor oral surgery. Here at Aviva Dental in Etobicoke we will provide some guidance on handling these issues.

The ideal person to talk about your problems, questions, comments, or concerns is a dentist, a dental expert having at least four years of further university education in this field.

These are important areas of concern; hence you should immediately contact your dentist:

  • If you are bleeding heavily and more than four hours have passed after surgery.
  • Should you feel as if you could pass out (nausea)?
  • Should you be vomiting (throw-back)
  • Should your fever be high-grade
  • If you experience particular discomfort after the procedure that does not go away over a whole day or longer.
  • If the edema is becoming worse or rising and the procedure was more than two days ago.
  • Your Aviva dentist will numb the region of your mouth that is to be treated with a "freezing," or local anesthetic, prior to oral work. The kind of freezing or anesthetic used and the dosage will determine how long your mouth remains numb. Take care not to bite down on your face, lip, or tongue after your mouth is numb. Your dentist will provide you further instructions to follow before and after your procedure if your form of freezing causes you to fall asleep—a generic anesthetic.
Usually, the numbness passes in few hours. It is natural to feel some discomfort as the numbness goes away. In the first 24 to 48 hours after your operation, you will be rather uncomfortable. Some pain or discomfort at the surgical site could last three to five days. The kind of operation you undergo, your overall level of activity, and general state of health will all affect the degree of pain you experience. You could be more uncomfortable if you are working and rushing around. Better still, relax. Your dentist could provide prescriptions for medications to help to reduce discomfort. We term this kind of medication an analgesic. An antibiotic is the medication they could also recommend to assist ward against infection.

Bleeding
While the blood is clotting, your dentist will apply a gauze pad to the area in order to reduce the amount of bleeding that occurs. It is recommended that you leave this gauze pad in place for a period of one hour after you have left the dentist's office. Make sure to apply a strong pressure to the pad with your teeth but avoid chewing on it.

It is likely that you may have bleeding during the first one to two hours after surgery. Over the course of twenty-four hours, the region may continue to ooze. If it seems that you are bleeding an excessive amount, you need not be frightened. Because saliva and blood have a tendency to mix together in your mouth, it gives the impression that a great deal more bleeding is really taking place because of this. If you are unable to stop the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the gauze pad after four hours, you should contact Aviva Dental in Etobcioke immediately.
